Measurement and Reduction

Measurement

Offset the Rest works with Cawthron to measure the carbon footprint of your company.  Our footprint measurement service is scientifically robust, and adheres to the highest international standards; the GHG Protocol for corporate accounting and reporting, and ISO 14064-1.

The scope of your carbon footprint measurement is determined during our consultative process.  We work with you to determine the aspects of your business to be included in the measurement of your carbon footprint.  Please contact us if you would like to discuss the carbon footprint of your business.

And remember, our personal emissions calculator is also available freely for your use.

Reduction

Sustainable business practices are now imperative.  Every business in every industry can implement initiatives to reduce energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions.   We can assist you with the development of carbon management strategies and the setting of reduction targets as part of your commitment to sustainability.

To help get you started, we have compiled a list of simple ways to reduce the carbon footprint of your business now:

  • Turn off any lights that are not being used, except those needed for safety and security.  This includes the foyer, stairwell, and bathrooms.  Make sure the last person to leave at night is responsible for turning out any remaining lights, and if cleaners come through after-hours, make sure they are also being responsible.  Change all lighting to energy saving bulbs.
  • Turn off any equipment that is not actually in use.  If you have a choice, use your equipment at off-peak times during the day.
  • Rationalise the equipment you have in your office.  If you can, reduce the number of printers, photocopiers, fridges, and additional appliances.
  • Make the most of any natural light where possible by keeping blinds up and repositioning desks into locations where they can better benefit from natural light.
  • Open windows if possible, rather than using air-conditioning.  Don't use air-conditioning and heating if windows and doors are open.
  • Try to reduce the amount of printing undertaken by employees.  Make sure they print out only what is necessary, and when they do ensure both sides of the paper are used.
  • Try to avoid unnecessary travel by using the phone, computer, or video conferencing instead.
  • Implement recycling policies.  Make it easy for your employees to recycle all plastic, glass, and paper products.
  • Check that thermostats on the heating, air-conditioning, and hot water cylinders are set correctly.
  • Encourage your employees and customers to get behind your initiative by putting up signs to remind them to turn off lights; challenge them to come up with additional ways to reduce energy consumption, and reward them for their efforts when savings are achieved.
